Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Director of Center for the Study of Human Rights, the incumbent assists with ISHR's project on Darfur and ISHR Peace Building program. The incumbent contributes to the planning, organizing, and day-to-day operations of ISHR with Darfurian Civil Society Representatives. The incumbent will also support the development of the Peace Building program. Other duties will include organizing trainings, meetings, workshops and events. The incumbent is expected to work with the Associate Director and other ISHR staff to establish and maintain collaborative exchanges with organizations and universities concerned with human rights and peace building advocacy and training and capacity building.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Applicant must meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant Bachelor's degree or equivalent. A minimum of one year of related human rights experience required.

Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications

Applicant must meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant Experience working with a human rights organization is required. Excellent writing and communications skills. Excellent interpersonal and inter-cultural skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent organizational and administrative skills with attention to detail. Computer and internet literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

Substantive knowledge of human rights and peace building strongly preferred. Advanced degree in international affairs or related field strongly preferred. Particular expertise in training and/or capacity building preferred. Knowledge of international and grassroots human rights NGOs and international organizations strongly preferred. Knowledge of Arabic is preferred. Fundraising experience strongly preferred.

Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Director of the Institute, the Assistant Director for Education handles all program development and administrative matters relating to academically-based education activities for which ISHR is responsible. This includes, as appropriate, the admissions process; student registration and enrollment in courses; certification for degrees; student fellowship and grant administration; faculty appointment procedures; course listing; the maintenance of student records; the preparation of handbooks and other materials for student and faculty use on annual basis; and the preparation of an annual review of the education programs.

The Assistant Director for Education manages and oversees the planning, organizing, and day-to-day operations of the human rights LSMA, summer school, and other graduate and undergraduate student instruction. S/he oversees the administration of academic fellowships , works with faculty and students to address their needs on an on-going basis, coordinates mentoring and supervisory relationships, and maintains contacts with the offices of career services and other institutions to facilitate student placement in internships and jobs.

ISHR anticipates taking on new education programs for both graduate and undergraduate students; the Assistant Director for Education will be expected to take a primary role in the development, management and evaluation of such programs. S/he is also expected to take the lead role in fund-raising for such programs, including by identifying potential funding sources and preparing and submitting proposals. The Assistant Director for Education reports directly to the Associate Director on Education programs.

Experience in management of personnel. Excellent team participation skills are essential, as is the capacity to work within an organizational structure and the ability to work independently. Fundraising experience. Excellent writing and communications skills. Excellent interpersonal and inter-cultural skills. Excellent organizational and administrative skills with attention to detail. Computer and internet literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in international affairs or related field strongly preferred. Particular expertise in academic management and human rights education strongly preferred. Fluency in a major language in addition to English preferred.
