Workshop on Human Rights Research & Paper Prize Competition

CSHR announces the first annual Columbia University Graduate Student Workshop on Human Rights Research and Paper Prize Competition, a call for papers open to Columbia Students.

Numerous academic disciplines contribute to the study of human rights and human rights practices. At the same time, disciplinary boundaries sometimes have the effect of hindering scholarly awareness of potentially complementary ideas and modes of inquiry. The normative, representational, and empirical complexity of human rights ideas and processes make it an extremely promising area for cross-disciplinary sharing of knowledge. In an effort to promote such cross-disciplinary conversation and interaction, the Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University is seeking paper proposals from Columbia graduate and post-doctoral students in the Arts and Sciences on subjects related to human rights.

Paper proposals should be 200 to 300 words in length and should be sent together with your name and departmental affiliation to CSHR at by June 1, 2009.  Please include “Paper Prize Competition” in the subject of your email.

Participating scholars will be expected to present and discuss their completed papers at a one-day workshop at Columbia University on November 13, 2009. Two prizes of $300 each will be awarded from among papers selected for presentation.
